A good skincare routine should work all year round. Gentle cleansing, exfoliation, targeting concerns, hydration, and protecting the skin are the fundamentals of building a routine, but the way we do these things should slightly change as the seasons do in order to take care of our skin’s needs. It might seem like skin professionals have effortlessly glowing skin, but they just know how to adapt to their environment and work a little harder to prevent breakouts and avoid sun damage during the summer months

1) SPF
It is so important to protect your skin from prolonged peak sun exposure. Look for a broad spectrum spf 30 to block the sun’s UV rays and avoid burning your skin. Remember to re- apply every 2 hours, and wear protective clothing and seek shade.

2) Lighten Up Your Routine
Swap out heavy products for light-weight cleansers and creams, and look for a hydrating SPF lotion to eliminate wearing so many layers in the morning. Just as we lighten up our clothing during the humid summer months, we want airy breathable skincare and makeup during the season too.

3) Invest In A Good Vitamin C Serum
Vitamin C and E work to boost the benefits of your SPF when worn underneath. Vitamin C also helps break down and prevent pigmentation, and encourages collagen formation.
4) Double Cleanse
Make sure you are thoroughly double cleansing your skin to make sure you are removing sweat, dirt, oils, makeup, and SPF residue at the end of your day.

5) Re-Think Your Exfoliation
Although I don’t recommend it, if you are going to be laying out in the sun all summer it might be time to take a break or space out the use of your resurfacing retinol serums, and exfoliating acids that will leave your skin sensitized to the elements. But on the other hand, upping your exfoliating routine (face and body) will help soften dried out summer skin texture and help your skincare products sit better. At the end of the day, you know what is best for your lifestyle and skincare should be an intuitive experience, customize what feels right for you and your skin. I prefer using gentle enzymes or physical scrubs in the summer, or a salicylic acid toner to sweep away oil and debris.
